SF Gate REVIEW - Joshua Kosman
"Sacrificium," the title of Cecilia Bartoli's magnificent new collection of Baroque arias for castrato, seems to ask us to dwell on the sorrow and even the barbarity of this strange cultural practice, which I'm happy to do. But the performances here tell another story - they remind us how dynamic, extravagant and downright sexy this music was to 18th century audiences, and can still sound today. Bartoli bolts out the gate with a breathlessly fast "shipwreck" aria (a Baroque trope bordering on cliche) by Nicola Porpora, and the sheer vigor and precision of her performance defy belief. Further selections tread a similar path, with Bartoli unleashing fireballs of coloratura in superbly judged proportions; they serve for pure dazzlement or pictorial effect, as in another Porpora aria about a nightingale (Vinci, Graun, Leo and other composers are also represented). The slow arias are less impressive, serving to reveal the patchiness of her vocal tone, but the instrumental playing by Il Giardino Armonico is first-rate. - Joshua Kosman 10/26/2009 1:57 PM (GMT-08:00)
